Ansgar: The Struggle of a people is the first book in the Windflower Saga trilogy. It tells the story of a young duke who comes from a noble Kimbrian family. He seeks out the remnants of an indigenous people, called the Kimbrii, to try to help their culture survive. The Kimbrii are a horse culture, and renowned as horse archers and herdsmen, but were subjugated when their lands were colonized by the Kimbrians and pushed into a wasteland. Ansgar journeys into the wasteland to find them, only to come near death. He is saved by a young woman, named Keholani, who is a clan chief of the Kimbrii. He falls in love with her and they marry, beginning a family line, the only one of four royal ducal lines which is of mixed heritage, who carry on the language and traditions of the Kimbrii, especially their love and respect for horses, in a secret Kimbrii homeland hidden inside the wastelands.

The story of their descendants continues in the other novels of the trilogy: “Of Wisdom and Valor: The Art of War. The Path of Peace.” (Part II of the Windflower Saga) and “Far Haven: A Quest for certitude. A Fight for Justice.” As well as in the related novellas: “The Feathered Crown”, “Far Endeavor,” and “Bind Not the Heart.”


A Windflower Saga Story for Kids

Bright Star, A Pony of the Kimbrii is a short kids picture book which tells about the first pony that Keholani had as a child. Bright Star becomes the best friend of a seven-year-old girl named Keho. As a young pony he leaves the high meadows to live with her in her village. He later returns to the meadows to become a herd stallion, like his father, protecting the mares and foals from danger. This is a story of courage and friendship, as a young colt matures into a brave and courageous stallion.

A related picture book called “Tiyo, The Dog Who Saved Ansgar tells the story of the herding dog who helped Keholani rescue Ansgar in the Wastelands. 


About the Author
Aleksandra Layland is a retired civil engineer and federal civil servant who worked primarily for the United States Air Force as a senior installation engineering manager responsible for buildings, airfields, infrastructure, fire protection, and emergency preparedness. She also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Western Caroline Islands where she helped build school classrooms and cafeterias, low income housing, and simple village water distribution systems. Her other interests include arts and crafts, family genealogy, religion and spirituality, fostering peace in the world, and enjoying retirement with family and friends.

The Windflower Saga book series is comprised of the following volumes which trace the lives of members of the fictional Ansgar ducal family against a background of struggles between forces such as good and evil, love and hate, and war and peace.
