Poetry from the Field: Monday Road Poetry Volume II is Gina McKnight’s second poetry collection and draws on the natural beauty that is around us to inspire and invigorate your senses, with the inclusion of Tamara Rymer’s illustrations helping to do so. McKnight often utilizes longer forms of poetry, with several feet in one line that takes on a more traditional meter, but has also mastered the use of shorter forms of poetry in which a line may consist of only one syllabic foot. Her effortless use of both styles indicates not only a familiarity with writing, but also a sense of familiarity with oneself. Her poetry reaches down inside you and excavates memories of lazy afternoons with the sun shining overhead, the sweet scent of flowers carried in on a breeze, and the feeling of being grounded and connected with the earth, a feeling that is often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As a huge fan of poetry, I was delighted to read Poetry from the Field: Monday Road Poetry Volume II and recommend that all my fellow poetry lovers do the same! Although there are several good poems throughout this collection, some of my stand out favorites include Exhale, a beautiful piece that personifies the earth and brings forth beautiful mental imagery with phrases like “a / ripple of sundust / a hiss of / mirth” and Innuendo, which elicits the soft, muted feeling one gets when the rain begins to gently fall over a garden, as well as the poems Deity and Whisper.

To the Heart: A poetry Collection - Readers' Favorite Book Review

New! Book Review
Reviewed by Tshombye K. Ware for Readers' Favorite

To the Heart: Monday Road Poetry Volume 1 by Gina McKnight is a collection of well-written, heartfelt poetry written from a heart that understands the art of poetry. I've read many books on poetry. To be honest, poetry is my first love. So I get excited when I read poetry by someone who understands the rhythmic art that comes in the craft. The author is no stranger to poetry and it's evident throughout the book. The creation is warm and endearing. Some of the writings make you think and reflect. The style is unique. I gazed at the poems before reading and simply smiled to see the structure of each poem. I can tell the author didn't just throw some words together in hopes of passing it off as great poetry. I'm also aware the poetry is subjective because it's written from the mind of the writer. But should it be that complicated? No, it shouldn't.

I believe poetry can be complex and appreciative. The author encompasses both in this book. Each word and beat is designed in completion, complementing one another. Poems should be read in one breath. The author has accomplished this as well, which makes this book of poetry stand alone. If you're looking for a book that flows poetically, this is your book. I would recommend this to poetry lovers. They will be more than impressed. I read some of the lines more than once because their creation whispers softly to me. Poetry should go beyond the eye, into the heart, and expand within the body. This book performs that feat easily.

Grace

He stomps a leg, feeling
The wind

It’s all coming off, it’s
Leaving again
Itchy, scratchy, pulling
And tug
Finding a post, rubbing
The rump
Dangling, puffy, dangling
Some more
How much can a
Body endure?

Finally, relief, it begins
To undo

And gently releases to
Curry’s pull
But, some linger – there
You know
The place; deep recess where
Hair shouldn’t
Grow…

Clippers it is! Total release!
Winter over

Shedding takes grace

Heaven

Discovering in the darkness
the fate of newborn stars,
gathering dewy cobwebs
from the midnight hour

To solemnly lay down at night
our head upon the sheets,
to grasp an understanding
of deep love, folded and neat

Of loves immortal solitude
amongst sultry hearts,
of nights and days and how
they spin; the heavens near and far

Of violets, lace and silky things
that gather and then mate,
of iodized thoughts and letters lost
that lead to heaven’s gate

The Road to Awe

the Mayan believed that
the dead live on;
plant a seed over the grave,
the seed becomes a tree,
the dead become
part of the tree;
grows into the wood,
into the bloom,
into the fruit,
and when a sparrow
eat's the fruit,
they fly with the birds..
