Milliron Monday: The Veil

Abbott "Pete" Smith D.V.M.
June 16, 1938 - February 22, 2010
Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017), including his wife Jody (1938-2021).

"My mother had no clue that I was
planning my wedding while I was in Europe.
Jody Smith

Jody's wedding dress is folded neatly in its original light blue box. A beautiful design, the dress was fashioned just for her. In the box is Jody's veil, the veil she told me about so many times.

While Pete was in vet school and Jody was in-between semesters, Virginia, Jody's mother, began conniving. She sent Jody on a tour of Europe, hoping Jody would forget about the cowboy-veterinarian with a dream in his pocket.

In Jody's keepsakes, there are stacks of love letters from Pete - Airmail from Colorado to Europe. Unknown to Virginia, the couple was planning marriage. They married September 4, 1959, the same year Jody returned from Europe. Virginia was so annoyed she forgot to send out wedding invitations.

While in Europe, Jody purchased a beautiful Venetian lace veil to wear on her wedding day...

The bride wore a floor-length gown of organza taffeta styled with a fitted bodice and a full skirt which was worn over a hoop. Iridescent sequins were embroidered on the Venetian lace trim at the scooped neckline.
A hand-made mantilla wedding veil, which she had purchased in Venice, Italy, was the bride's headdress. In her shoes were Irish and Australian sixpence coins, also brought back by the bride when she returned from a trip abroad this summer.

Many years later, Jessica wore the veil at her wedding. Now, the veil is stored away awaiting the 2022 memorial service where it will be displayed along with Jody's wedding dress.

Have a great week ahead.
