Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire.

Located near the banks of the Hocking River, The Dairy Barn is a historic landmark in the Ohio Valley. With a long history of serving people, the landmark once housed Grand Champion bulls, as well as many prized cows. In the early 1960s, the dairy barn was home to 221 cattle, with plenty of milk and milk products to feed the nearby community.

The veterinarians of the Athens Veterinary Clinic were on-call 24/7 for the beloved herd. Dr. Pete Smith, arriving in Athens in the early 1960s, made a few trips to the barn before the herd dwindled in the 1970s. "Pete was called to vet a cow or two when Dr. Phillips was unavailable," Jody, Dr. Smith's widow, remembers.

Today The Dairy Barn Arts Center is a place of creativity and culture. Saved from demolition by community leaders, including renowned naturalist Ora Anderson, the barn is an Ohio icon
