Milliron Monday: Thankful 11 19 18

Abbott "Pete" Smith, D.V.M.
June 16, 1938 - February 22, 2010

Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast, Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire.

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving, the national holiday where we recognize the Pilgrims and their harvest festival. The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, a very long time ago - and I'm positive the Pilgrims would smile at our Thanksgiving celebration today. With the removal of historical monuments and people wanting to rewrite American history, the fact that we continue to celebrate Thanksgiving is amazing. I am grateful that we do. But, I digress, this is Milliron Monday, and today I am writing with a thankful heart for the life of Dr. Pete Smith.

The truth is veterinarians work on holidays; a horse with colic, a dog hit by a car, a cat with a broken leg - any animal in peril takes precedence over a national (or otherwise) holiday. Family members watch as their veterinarian (husband, wife, daughter, son, etc.) rushes out the door, turkey and dressing untouched, to an emergency.

Dr. Smith loved to eat. If he was on a farm call on Thanksgiving, he was greeted with appreciation and a plate of food. His clients considered him part of their family and Dr. Smith gladly would sit at their table (Thanksgiving or not).

As an animal owner, I am grateful for my veterinarian. Whenever I have an emergency, he is always available and comes to my barn without hesitation. Take a moment this Thanksgiving week and let your veterinarian know how much he/she is appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving!
