Abbott "Pete" Smith, D.V.M.
June 16, 1938 - February 22, 2010

Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeastern, Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire. Follow along every Milliron Monday to revisit Dr. Smith's biography.

Today, a very hot September 3rd, contemplating the joys of September and the sadness of summer's end, I fast-forward through Dr. Smith's biography (from Chapter 1 to Chapter 3) to remember Pete and Jody's September 4th wedding anniversary. Even though a day early, I think it's appropriate to share The Mansfield News Journal wedding announcement that we may remember the anticipation and excitement of marriage...

The Reverend Samuel U. J. Peard, rector of the Grace Episcopal Church and Dr. J. Calvin Winder, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiated at the September 4 nuptials of Miss Virginia Joyann [Jody] Haley and Mr. Abbott P. [Pete] Smith III, the latter of Englewood, Colorado. The double-ring wedding was solemnized at Grace Episcopal Church at 4:30 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Franklin (Bart) Haley, 692 West Andover Rd., are the parents of the bride. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abbott P. Smith II, of Natick, Massachusetts and New York City.
Mrs. Dean Eckert presented a half-hour program of nuptial music preceding the exchange of vows. Mr. Haley escorted his daughter to the altar.
The bride wore a floor-length gown of organza taffeta styled with a fitted bodice and a full skirt which was worn over a hoop. Iridescent sequins were embroidered on the Venetian lace trim at the scooped neckline.
A hand-made mantilla wedding veil, which she had purchased in Venice, Italy, was the bride’s headdress. In her shoes were Irish and Australian sixpence coins, also brought back by the bride when she returned from a trip abroad this summer.
She carried a white prayer book topped with a corsage of white roses and stephanotis and tied with white ribbon lovers-knots.
Preceding the bride to the altar were her three attendants, Miss Janet Simmons, Denver, Colorado, maid of honor and Delta Delta Delta sorority sister; Miss Susan Smith, Natick, Massachusetts and New York City, sister of the bridegroom; and Mrs. Gary L. Haley, sister-in-law of the bride.
They wore like-styled gowns of organza taffeta, the honor attendant in royal blue and the others in cotillion blue. The dresses were styled with fitted bodices and ballerina-length skirts, the drape of the sweetheart necklines repeated in the draped effect at the hemlines.
Each wore a matching headpiece of taffeta and velvet petals with an attached circular veil of shoulder length, and carried an arm bouquet of white carnations tied with white taffeta ribbons.
The bridegroom’s father attended him as best man. Mr. James Smith, Natick, Massachusetts and New York City, brother of the bridegroom, served as acolyte. Guests were ushered to their places by Dr. Gary L. Haley, brother of the bride, and Mr. Charles Keiper, Dunkirk.
Following the ceremony, members of and close friends of the families were entertained at a wedding supper in the Lincoln Room at The Loff. Miss Janet Smith, sister of the bridegroom, was in charge of the guest book.
A graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, the bride is a senior at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. She served as chaplain of her sorority during the past year.
The bridegroom is a graduate of Denver schools and is studying veterinary medicine at Colorado State University. He owns the Milliron Land and Cattle Company.
Now honeymooning at a mountain retreat in Wyoming, the couple will be at home after September 15, at 917 Remington, Fort Collins, Colorado.
Mr. and Mrs. Hal Moore, Barberton, entertained the bridal party at dinner early last week. The rehearsal dinner was held at Westbrook Country Club.

Tomorrow, I will be interviewing at the WOUB Studios, Athens, Ohio, about writing Milliron. Jody will be there, always supporting my endeavors and the Milliron legacy, for which I am forever grateful.
