Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate 
the legacy of Milliron Farm and Clinic, 
Dr. Pete and Jody Smith.

A continuation of Jody’s Journals.

January 1983

·        Pete, firewood above T. Wagner’s, rode Junie, J rode Apple, took Colonel – Mary Anne, Eric, Marley, rode with us for a while > Thompson’s “County Supper Casserole”

·        To church, Pat there > rode, took Colonel, Streak (got out of pen), wagged for 25-35 minutes; Pete rode Apple jogged after he got back, took pictures of farm > pizza, movie “The Toy” semi-funny

·        Worked at clinic > got horses in, Carl Meeks shod them

·        Pete, llama operation, broken leg > ran errands, took Colonel, Puff

·        To clinic > Epiphany Service, Lutheran Church, talked to Shelia Theiss, Joanne Wells, etc.

·        Put creche set, ceramic tree away > Mr. Fryman, clinic

·        Wagged-took Colonel, Streak, Kanga, Sissy > to Sherman’s, discussed dinnerware > CJ’s with Pat, Fritz, Carolyn, Lisa

·        To Church > Croxford’s dropped Debbie off at skating rink > black ewe, twin black lambs > to clinic briefly, Pete rode Apple to Dow Lake; I rode Junie to Dutch Creek w/Colonel, Streak > Luther, Jean H. pictures of Belize, Bruce K. slides (Pete, Eric, me)

·        Worked at clinic/barn > Pete to Howland’s on call

·        Tim S. here, used backhoe to look for septic tank > ran errands, read by fire, watch TV

·        To clinic, worked on drug bills > to barn, rushed > Pete, Eric, John, Karen Null horse colic surgery

·        Pete helped Tim put tank in > to Charleston, Sherry I., black ewe lambs, lunch at Duff’s, drove part of way down to Leslie’s > Nancy Bonnett left clipboard there, went back after it, watched part of Magnum PI > drove most of way home, 1:30 am

·        Worked at clinic, brief nap, barn, new black lamb, white ewe > Lisa Davis here tea, cookies, talked about job, buying Leffler farm (?)

·        To church, met Pat, Croxford’s > to clinic briefly, got horses in, rode, Mary Anne, Eric, Pete, I took Colonel, Puff, Streak, wagged 40 minutes on way back (lead Junie)

·        Looked for “Prince Caspian”, took Colonel, Puff > to clinic, colic mare

·        Pete, Tim stacked timbers > short nap > to Marietta/Lafayette Hotel SEOAV (late for dinner)

·        Barn, clinic, short nap > “Shop Hop”, O’Hooley’s, “Irish Brigade” home 3:00 am

·        Slept in > Emmanuel Service, Father Black/Bishop Black > to barn, put up gate on sheep shed, herded sheep in with Colonel > movie, sleepy, read by fire

·        Desk, clinic, barn, nap > barn, herded sheep in with Colonel

·        Dogan’s picked up ram > Annie worse, Pete treated

·        R. Much fixed dryer, pilot light > worked at barn

·        Clinic, took Puff, got newspapers > got dead lamb from locust grove

·        Pete WOUB radio interview > barn “Bobby Sox” black mule twins > wagged blackberry meadow Puff, Colonel, Kanga

·        Looked for barking dog, checked sheep, took Colonel > worked at clinic until 7 > P.C. in basement !!!! then but ok > went on 2 calls with Pete > cake at Virgil McKnight’s, Nelsonville > Limuli’s (?} barn, midnight

·        To church, Croxford’s > office, briefly > to barn, rode Junie, wagged 40 mins, took Streak, Puff; Pete rode Apple to Dow Lake, took Colonel > fell asleep reading by fire

·        To clinic barn, new set of black twins

 

February

·        To barn/clinic, ran errands > Dave Smart cut hair > Library, K. Foster, copying

·        Clinic, Sherman’s brought pottery

·        Pete to Charleston > put pottery away > pretty snow

·        Flu, slept all day

·        Wrote letters at desk > took clinic laundry, 2 loads down to dry > barn, 4 lambs > Pete on calls, fairgrounds, Mac’s > read by fire

·        To church, Croxford’s > clinic briefly > Pete changed wills > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple, took Colonel, walked back last ½ hour, saw deer watching us > Pete fixed gate on sheep shed, put up carpet, plywood horse shed > Pete/Pat brought up firewood > read by fire

·        Ron Muhn here > Pete cut wood > took car, Puff, ran errands, ate at Casa, O’Hooley’s, movie “The Verdict” excellent

·        Beautiful snow, napped > to barn, took Puff, Colonel > Pete jogged > Hockey game, Tim S. went with us in truck

·        Lovely walk in snow w/Kanga, Colonel, Streak > listened to Prairie Home Companion, groomed dogs/cats

·        Church, beautiful music, Ed Payne > to clinic, Eric filled in for Pat, left early > rode Junie, took Puff, Colonel, Streak > Pete rode Apple

·        Clinic/barn > watched TV, popcorn

·        Pete, Eric cut wood > to barn, docked, castrated lambs, 19 – 9 males, 10 females, 16 black, 3 white

·        Pete jogged, took Colonel > to barn, everyone in hay meadow, washed hair, P.C. flipped mud on it > took truck, Ash Wednesday Service (Puff); walked up-downstairs Baker Center, trying to get tickets

·        Pete, Eric cut wood > Colonel lame

·        Clinic/barn, paid bills > Brass quintet, got pizza, drove back to check Shelties (strychnine) > Ramsey Lewis ZW concert, Jerry H., Ann H., J, Eric there, to Union briefly; Studio 38, CJ’s, O’Hooley’s briefly, got donuts, stopped at Stop n Go, car quit, Ann H. came after us, left car there, checked dogs

·        Right eyelid swollen, sore > to church > clinic, briefly > clipped Junie > Ann, Jerry, Pete rode on around, did chores

·        To barn, late > met K. Foster, watched group judging (1st half) Westminster

·        Pete on calls > to barn > Lewis’ draft horse class toured clinic > Baskin Robbins, Baker Center, movie “Urban Cowboy”

·        J. Hartley here, brought saddle cover > bee man (Glouster) here > rode Junie, took Puff, Colonel, Streak, took pictures > Lucas barn area wagged/saw Tim S. fence rock trail > watched Westminster at Pat’s, Pete stopped briefly

·        Took Pete for radio show > Karl Meeks shod horses > drove around Dutch Creek, possible hunters > desk, briefly

·        Clinic APS surgery > lunch Root’s > OVMA meeting Columbus, to French Market, movie “Gandhi”

·        Prayer breakfast > OVMA meetings, luncheon Woody Hayes, ate at Engine House Five, German Village > back to clinic, Eric/Johnny left

·        5 sheep out > worked at clinic/barn

 

March

·        Whole flock out, whistled back in, took Puff, Kanga, Colonel, sheep in, blood on fur > Pete put up fence to water gap gate

·        APS clinic, Charleston > rode Junie, wagged Streak, Colonel, Puff; Colonel tore off toenail, left front paw

·        Clinic/barn > brief nap > Cleveland orchestra, excellent, dinner at Lamb’s Garden > Monty Python movie “Life of Brian

·        Clinic/barn, black ewe, white face, put her in hay shed area > Pete on calls > Jerry, Jolene here, checked ewe, died > movie “Man from Snowy River” Ausie Western, pizza

·        Church > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple to Dow Lake thru woods, talked with Wentworth’s

·        Clinic, ran errands, courthouse, beautiful day

·        Pete up for lunch, then to Charleston > to barn, took Bullett, Sissy, Colonel, Streak, Puff, Kanga, wagged hay meadow, found maggots on dead black ewe in hay meadow, young black ewe far edge of cliff pasture, new black male lamb > cold

·        To courthouse, copied documents > drove to Parkersburg, took Puff, 10:00 lawyer Richard S regarding … > stopped at J. Jones’ no one there

·        Clinic/barn, paid bills > barn, short feeding, very tired > Kerry, J’s dinner, Pete worked on horses, watched Beetle show on TV

·        Church, worked at clinic briefly > cleaned up alleyway > I rode Junie, Pete rode Apple, rode to Dow Lake, saw turkeys

·        Streak out > ran errands > Pete on calls

·        Dog barking in woods, I took Colonel Puff, Kanga, didn’t hear it again; Puff got sitting groundhog, I brought collar (?) back for Paul Meier (research project); black lamb on hillside, brought sheep back out of long hay meadow, ewe finally claimed lamb, took Colonel > watched basketball game, OU won, bed 1:30 am > Pete back from Charleston 3:30 am

·        Took Pete’s car to town, looked thru “Friendly Beast” toy shop, read; picked up film, traveler’s checks > to clinic/barn, showed Eric chores > J, Teresa K. arrive 2:30 am

·        Left for funeral of Carl S.’s friend, stopped in Georgia

·        Took back roads, looked at horses, treated, etc., beautiful bay Standardbred trotter, 3 years old April 2nd > arrived Mom/Dad’s 11:30 pm

·        Pete laid out in sun/beach, walked both directions, jogged

·        Cool, breezy, beautiful sunset/beach, went to movies

·        Walked, saw alligator, bobcat!, walked, picked up shark’s teeth, played “rabbit” card game

·        Left for Epcot Center, saw Jerry Hilferty, Ann Howland, Josh, Andrea, Pat

·        Drove thru, walked Washington Oaks State Gardens > Marine Land, porpoise’s > stayed overnight on North Carolina/South Carolina border

·        Charleston, to Leslie’s, S. Deel’s, palped mares, etc. > picked up “Song”, got Bongo, Bart at Athens Boarding Kennel, ate at Sizzler

·        To Church, ate at Croxford’s > I rode Junie, Pete rode Apple (after reins caught on Persimmon and led him around), took dogs; back right before storm, beautiful double rainbow > Annie off feed, Pete gave her penicillin > Eric’s horses in wood > read newspapers

·        Tom Wagner picked up pony art > barn, gave Annie penicillin, eating some now/older sheep type ewe, large black lamb

·        Pete here for lunch > barn, put rabbit, cat in shelter > Pizza House, movie “Black Stallion Returns”

·        Pete to Charleston > J Lucas called, sheep out, Pat helped fix fence,     take leaves out of gutters, picked up yard > wagged Streak, Puff,    Colonel, Kanga > Missy 3 kittens > Pete home 6 am
