Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast, Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire. Follow along every Milliron Monday to revisit Dr. Smith's biography.
This past week, I had the great opportunity to interview with WOUB Public Media, Athens, Ohio, Arts & Culture Journalist, Emily Votaw. Emily was a gracious host as Dr. Smith's widow, Jody, and daughter, Jessica, joined me for 25 minutes of conversation about Milliron. I will post a link to the interview when it becomes available.
As we continue Dr. Smith's legacy, reading from Chapter 3 Milliron, we find Pete in Colorado, while his father was busy penning two books about selling intangibles. Abbott's books are still available from online booksellers, including amazon.com.
An excerpt from Chapter 3 Milliron...
On the East Coast, Abbott, Pete’s father, became the proprietor of his own executive consulting company, Abbott Smith Associates. He began writing, and published several books in his lifetime, including How to Sell Intangibles (Prentice-Hall Inc., 1958). He inscribed a copy to Pete “To my son Pete – even a Vet needs to be a salesman! Abbott P. Smith.” In orange, black, and white graphics, the inside book jacket posts a portrait of Abbott’s strong features; an extremely handsome, suited man with dark hair, and glasses.
About the Author (taken from the book jacket):
Abbott P. Smith has been a professional salesman for a quarter of a century. In his outstanding career, he has trained and guided hundreds of salesmen and these salesmen’s brilliant successes are living testimonials to Mr. Smith’s unique insight and deep understanding of the problems which face the salesmen of intangibles day by day. Mr. Smith has earned an enviable reputation and sales record selling dozens of tangibles and intangibles lines…from sales training courses to microfilm…from radio time to real estate…from newspaper space to insurance. One of his many positions of responsibility was Supervisor of Sales Training and Sales Personnel for International Harvester Company.
Abbott’s second book, Complete Guide to Selling Intangibles, was published (Parker Publishing Company, Inc., New York, 1971). The book jacket notes that, by that time, he’d been a sales-training specialist and consultant for 18 years, developed training methods and programs at International Harvester, McGraw-Hill, Argyle Publishing Company, and the Silas Dean Organization before establishing his own firm in 1966. “Mr. Smith, now President of Abbott Smith Associates, Inc. and of ASA Training Consultants, Inc., has written three books for Prentice-Hall and numerous articles for various sales, management and training magazines,” the bio continues. The book received great acclaim from various notable corporations throughout the United States.
