Milliron Monday: Meeting Dr. Grandin 3 2 2020

Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire.

Today was an amazing Monday. Ohio University's College of Fine Arts hosted Dr. Temple Grandin at the Athena Cinema in Athens, Ohio. Thanks to Dr. Smith's family - Jody and Jessica - for the invite to attend!

Jody met Dr. Grandin many years ago at an American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) meeting. Dr. Smith attended the annual AVMA updates in medicine (mostly surgery) seminars, while Jody attended the animal behavioral seminars. Dr. Grandin is well-known for her work in animal behavior and welfare. A professor at Colorado State University, both Dr. Smith's and Jody's alma mater, Dr. Grandin has written many books focusing on science-based methods and ethical standards of animal welfare issues.

When we arrived at the Athena Cinema, Dr. Grandin was happy to meet us as she paused to sign copies of her books. After a brief introduction, Dr. Grandin answered questions from the audience, mostly about autism and her journey to success. Then we watched the HBO movie about her life Temple Grandin. If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend you watch it. I am a forever fan. Thanks, Dr. Grandin, for inspiration and motivation.

You can find all of Dr. Grandin's books on her Amazon Author Page.

Have a great week ahead.

Through captivating, powerful, and emotional anecdotes, we celebrate the life of Dr. Abbott P. Smith. His biography takes the reader from smiles to laughter to empathy and tears. Dr. Smith gave us compelling lessons learned from animals; the role animals play in the human condition, the joy of loving an animal, and the awe of their spirituality. A tender and profound look into the life of a skilled veterinarian.
