Milliron Monday: Finding Christmas 12 24 18

Abbott "Pete" Smith, D.V.M.
June 16, 1938 - February 22, 2010

Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast, Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire.

The painting above is a (partial) photo of the mural at (the former) Milliron Clinic. The mural covers the floor to ceiling entry hall - once greeting clients into the reception area, now quietly remembering the past.

This Christmas, we are thankful for veterinarians and those who work diligently to keep our pets healthy. We celebrate the long hours of farm vets who are on call day and night. Thanks, too, to our farriers and trainers, as they work hard to keep us in the saddle.

Where is Christmas? I believe that Dr. Smith would say to find Christmas in a quiet place where kindness rules and simplicity is everything. Find Christmas with your family, friends; those you love and who love you.

For me, Christmas is everyday - in the eyes of my mare, the purr of my cat, and a walk to the barn through the morning frost. We truly wish you a Merry Christmas. Enjoy the journey to the New Year!

Merry Christmas!

Poetry and Pearls II Romantic Poetry by N.R.Hart

New!
“I will write you into my forever.”
Available in Paperback here!

Poetry and Pearls II
Romantic Poetry

by N.R.Hart

We have only one heart yet the heart holds all four seasons inside. Winter can be a time of solitude. Spring a time of carefree fancy. Summer a time of fun and youthfulness and Autumn our souls take flight. Our hearts can survive the harshest of winters only to breathe in the sweetest scents of spring. There is a stillness inside all of us. Whether we choose to stop and listen to it, not everyone knows how. Poetry is used to express this stillness inside of us and fill the spaces between us with the words we are unable to say. Poetry can take us to a vulnerable place inside, allowing us to experience our innermost turbulence in the gentlest of ways. Our hearts speak to us every day; listen carefully to what it has to say. Come with me on this journey of the heart. The seasons of my heart and yours.

“Pay attention to what speaks to your heart.” N.R.Hart

Biography
N.R.Hart started writing poetry at a young age and used her poetry as a way to express her innermost thoughts and emotions. A true romantic at heart, she expresses feelings of love, hope, passion, despair, vulnerability and romance in her poetry. Trapping time forever and a keeper of memories is what she loves most about the enduring power of poetry. Her poetry has been so eloquently described as “words delicately placed inside a storm.” Poetry is here to make us feel instead of think; as thinking is for the mind and poetry is for the heart and soul. N.R.Hart hopes to open up your heart and touch your soul with her poetry.

“Poetry is not dead; it is alive in the minds of those who feel...instead of think.” N.R.Hart

Milliron Monday: Country Christmas 12 17 18

Abbott "Pete" Smith, D.V.M.
June 16, 1938 - February 22, 2010

Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate the legacy of Pete Smith, D.V.M., and  Milliron: Abbott “Pete” Smith, D.V.M. The Biography (Monday Creek Publishing 2017). A graduate of Colorado State University and a well-known veterinarian in southeast, Ohio, Dr. Smith continues to motivate and inspire.

This Christmas season, as we near the end of the calendar year, we reflect on the past year and the adventures, hurdles, triumphs, and blessings. As I reflect, I think about Dr. Smith, and how his life (family, friends, and clients) has enriched my life/career. If I could meet Dr. Smith this morning, it would be a thrill to talk with him about writing. A prolific writer, he would have written his own biography (and intended to do so) - more like a James Herriot type, instead of my insights and interviews. I can hear Dr. Smith now, in his bonafide Dr. Smith voice, "Now, Gina, I would write it this way...".

As a country veterinarian, Dr. Smith was a Country Christmas, usually called away from the family celebrations to save an animal with a life-threatening injury or illness. After all, giving yourself at a moments notice to save a life is what Christmas is all about - and Christmas was all year.

Like James Herriot, Dr. Smith had plenty of stories to tell of holiday animal maladies that required immediate attention. Herriot wrote of one such adventure in The Christmas Day Kitten. Here is the short version...

So begins The Christmas Day Kitten, another true story from James Herriot's rich experience as a country vet. As always, the tale includes a vivid group of characters on two legs and four: Mrs. Pickering and her three stately Basset hounds, James himself, and Debbie, the self-possessed stray cat who makes a special contribution to Christmas at the Pickering house. This is one of James Herriot's own favorite stories, and it is sure to be one of yours.

How many Christmas kittens did Dr. Smith encounter? We will never know, but we can safely say that there was more than a dozen - and dogs, horses, etc. We will celebrate a Country Christmas along with the Smith family in remembrance of Dr. Smith, his clients, and his many years of dedication to the Ohio Valley that he loved.

An excerpt…
If all I may do is to tell you this one thing is that
You have made me see clearly everything
The beauty in exploring
The gift of mistakes
The truth behind the crooked lines
The difference a conversation makes.
