Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate 
the legacy of Milliron Farm and Clinic, 
Dr. Pete and Jody Smith.

A continuation of Jody’s Journals.


October 1983

·        To clinic > Pete, Pat, Craig, filled house porch with wood > to barn > Sizzler’s, movie “Vacation” Chevy Chase (bad), O’Hooley’s briefly, met Jessica > picked up Beagle, broken leg D. Sturbois

·        Early church > oiled tack, combed out burros > saddle pad, girth cover, on way down to Stewart’s at Bob Evans farm > rode Gambler > worked at desk, wrote Mom/Dad

·        To clinic/barn > I rode briefly then went to Paul Bunyon Show, ate at Hop Sings

·        Early church > Pete worked at Pat’s house; Paul Bunyon Show, saw Jessica, Sweeney’s > rode farm - found P.C. in tree in lower pasture

·        To clinic > tried to get P.C. to come down > napped

·        Pete, Pat, took ladder to try to get P.C., went higher in tree > Pete on calls > ate at Townhouse, to “Bond” movie, met Pat, Karen there, to O’Hooley’s

·        To clinic, ran errands, got groceries > to Barn, Pat and Badger walked up and called P.C. > went with Pete to Hartley’s, chili, ice cream

·        Pat here for dinner, took Badger down to barn, finally got P.C. down from tree, waited on ladder for ½ an hour > read by fire, worked at desk, briefly

·        Pat, Craig here for breakfast, blender grits, used Vitamix > on calls with Pete to Bob Evans Festival, closed by time we got there, talked to Stewart briefly, went to Ogg’s to sew up horse’s eyelid

·        Early church > Pete put a culvert, etc., near road, for firewood party > rode Junie to Windy Hills, jumped, let him graze, etc., waiting for Jerry & J’Ann, I rode up farm field, off Browley Road, took Colonel > to barn, ground drive Junie > to clinic, Draft Horse put down > Pete went to Bill S’s.

·        To clinic/barn > went with Pete on call, back at midnight, Walking Horse Stable

·        Exercised, jogged > to clinic > rain > Pete worked in woods > Pete, Pat, I, went on call to fairgrounds, ate at Jack’s Steak House, Logan > went to Quarter Horse congress, saw Ann, Joleen, etc., R. Moor, C. Shields; Joleen won Amateur reining; home 3 am

·        To clinic > hair appt rescheduled > to barn > Pete jogged, took dogs

·        Pete to Charleston > groomed dogs, went after minnows, cat food

·        Pete up for lunch, nap

·        To clinic/barn, ditched road with Scottie > Pete on calls > Tim bulldozer > listened to Prairie Home Companion > read newspaper, etc.

·        To church, Old Coach Inn, lunch, nap > rode, new reins from Congress; Pete rode on around to Dow Lake, I rode back thru New Covenant, saw E. Davies, invited them to woodcutting party > ate at Sizzler’s > saw Karen Wheeler – C.W. music, Honky Tonk Heroes

·        Pat put gravel on dog paths > Pat, Craig Higgins raised 2 flagstones in walk > to clinic

·        To clinic, ran errands > Junie didn’t come in, looked for him, drove Scottie around pasture, left Apple in barn > Ann called Junie at Windy Hills

·        Stewart here > got Junie, put him in barn, turned Apple out, ground drove him > Pete, Stewart, worked on electric fence

·        To clinic > Pete WOUB meeting > ground drove Junie > took horses to hay meadow

·        To clinic > on calls to Charleston > stopped on Court Street, 1:30 am, Pete helped kids change tire

·        To church, OU Inn > Clinic > drove ground Junie > rode, Pete rode Apple, back in dark

·        To clinic > Pete meeting > to barn, saw 4 deer with sheep in hay meadow, took Pete’s dinner down > Ballet postponed

November

·        Groomed dogs > to clinic > Lackey boy here > worked on electric fence > called for party

·        To clinic > Pat, Craig here for dinner > read by fire

·        Glenn Lackey, Pete, Pat, Craig worked on fence > Pete here for lunch > ground drove Junie > drizzled, read by fire, called for party

·        Betty called > to clinic, went after cider, apples, looked for coffee pot > ground drove Junie > assembled items for party > got sheep in > to Howland’s/Hilferty’s pizza > watched part of movie, came home, oiled bells/harness > Pete came home after end of movie, emergency surgery, Dean’s Great Dane

·        Pete butchered lambs, I got equines in > church > Bonnett’s here > Byers, etc., here for bean/ham dinner > harnessed burros, etc., frustrating afternoon, waiting for transportation > great music > Streak barked on/off all night (lamb in yard) > Pete, I discussed party

·        Pat, I cut up remains of roasted lambs, Craig helped, washed off roaster parts, fixed sandwiches, sent Pete’s lunch down, took truck up to clean up camp area

·        Shut barn windows with Davidson’s ? > Alrod wormed, vacc > to clinic, brought Alrod up, Pat brought Badger up (Badger double Ivermectin), turned them out > Pat, I went to vote > ate at Grange Hall, saw Lafollette’s > scrubbed out beer kettle > to barn, rode Junie around thru woods > paid bills at clinic > Pat took cooker back > Pete on calls home 1 am

·        To clinic > Dave Smart cut hair > ran errands got groceries > to barn all four horses all right > fell asleep reading

·        Tim worked on Doris > Craig checked Doris for antifreeze, left cap off Doris/Caddy > Pete on calls to Charleston > worked in garden > rain, brief nap > went after minnows > fell asleep reading

·        Power out, used Coleman lantern to do barn chores > to movie > fell asleep at table

·        To clinic > Pete surgeries > Pete trimmed Alrod, gave Junie, Apple flea vacc > Eric rode horse over - Alrod, Pete, Apple, I brought Junie back, coughing, breathing bad > Pete more surgeries > fence broken, tied horses in barn

·        Pete, Pat, I, Unitarian Church > Pete, Pat, cut wood > Dave Smart, brother, 2 truckloads > I picked up yard, got rest of burros out of garden > Pete more emergency surgeries, took sandwich, Junie donor for him, Craig finished Dick Francis’ beer > Junie 2nd antibiotic shot

·        Pete worked on electric fence, gave Junie antibiotics, beautiful morning > Junie better > to clinic/barn

·        Pete gave Junie antibiotics, took him in barn > to clinic, Nancy Y. lunch at Townhouse SCC Joan B. AHPA no show > ran errands > bought magazine rack for clinic > Pete called from New Bolton Center

·        To Mansfield, seen Gary > cleaned house

·        R. Muhn fixed furnace > Pete home, went after woodcutting items > to barn > read by fire, bed early

·        Called phone co. again > put up storm doors > to clinic/barn

·        To church > Old Coach Inn lunch > to clinic > rode Alrod, Pete rode Apple, rain

·        To clinic > Marshall, Ed here briefly > put up more storm windows > rode Alrod, took Colonel, beautiful day

·        To clinic > errands, clinic car license, etc., lunch with K. Foster, Townhouse, Ted joined us

·        Pete, Pat, Craig here for lunch fixed fence > I rode Alrod took Banjo, Puff, talked with Jan/David > made quick bread, hot cider > dinner at Howland’s/Hilferty’s, Jerry’s brother Phil there, Mike C.

·        Pete WOUB > to barn after dark, Faline didn’t come in > read by fire, Pete jogged with Colonel, Ruff

·        Beautiful day > to clinic > rode Alrod, Ann Howland rode Winnie,, took Puff, Colonel around farm

·        To church > Pete bulldozer, put barricade across lot > put Faline in hay shed

·        Pete, Craig hunting > rode Junie around woods > to clinic/barn

·        Rode Junie, hauled deer in for Swardson’s > to clinic, ran errands

December

·        Rode June in rain > to clinic > rode Junie again, saw about a dozen deer, 3 grouse > listened to radio, read by fire

·        Sheep out in Lucas’ alfalfa, Pete got them in > to church, Old Coach Inn lunch, took Ann L. to lunch > turned rams out, put sheep in hay meadow > Pete rode Apple I took dogs for brief walk

·        Craig, Pat, here for lunch > to barn

·        Pete hunted upper meadow, saw big buck > well pump not running

·        Pete to Charleston

·        Rode Junie took Puff, saw Pat, helped Bob E. drag doe, Puff very gun shy ran off, circling

·        Cleaned house > open house L’H’s > Christmas Eve service

·        Christmas Day, gas furnace off, cold water in kitchen/frozen; Pete walked in woods > Marshall, Ed, Howland’s, Jerry H., here for dinner

·        Pete, Jessica, started off for calls to Charleston, car quit, towed to Russell’s

·        To clinic > Jessica, I, went to Gus Sherman’s for wedding present for Jessica’s friend, picked up photo at Mayles > fed at barn > Jessica, Pat, here for dinner

·        To clinic > Pete, Eric, wood cutting > rode with Jessica, very icy, rode Junie > Pete, Craig, surgery
