Welcome to Milliron Monday where every Monday we celebrate 
the legacy of Milliron Farm and Clinic, 
Dr. Pete and Jody Smith.

A continuation of Jody’s Journals.

April 1983

·        To clinic/barn, aborted goat > called about shot gun for Pete > O’Hooleys, saw Phil Clark, Joette Meeks, Kerry H. > Siegfried movie “The Maltese Falcon”

·        Milked Faline > clinic > took pickup truck into library, waited for Pete to Jackson area on calls, ate at Sizzlers

·        To church, lovely music, Goldsberry boys met us at Stagecoach Inn > to clinic, Pat worked for Nanette > rode Junie, took Streak, Colonel; Pete, Eric rode to Dow Lake, took Colonel, Marley, I brought Streak back (on line along highway)

·        Pete, WOUB radio > income taxes > barn/clinic

·        To clinic > ran errands, saw Judy, Ron Glasgow

·        Pete to Charleston > took dogs for wag, dead ewe in bottom, Colonel drove lamb to rest of sheep > Pete home 6 am

·        To clinic/barn, Annie off feed, put her, black lamb in hay shed > Cassie Hoon Bowers, Rick, Ann, Jim Hoon here for dinner, looked at horses

·        Jobs with Peace program, Pete Hill, Claudia Caldwell > to church > clinic, briefly > Pete planted trees, I bedded down sheep, horse sheds with hay from mangers, rained > Pete gave Annie penicillin

·        To barn, gave Annie penicillin, worse, breathing hard, died

·        Looked for oxen clippings for J > ran errands > Pete on calls

·        To clinic/barn > Pete ran, took Ruff, Colonel, and made up yogurt for Hopkins

·        Pete to Charleston > lots of rain > wrote letters > Pete home at 4:45 am

·        To clinic, Eric ill, Mr. Fryman > to barn, black lamb only drank part of bottle

·        To clinic > Pete on calls Wooley’s, Gassen’s, Thomas’, Newt, Sherry > ate at Mrs. Battrell’s restaurant in Albany, Meigs fairgrounds

·        Early church > rode thru Phillips place, Blockers, up Dutch Creek, twp. road, past Wentworth’s, Dow Lake, etc., to show, took Colonel Streak > Evensong choral choir festival, Good Shepherd, lovely ate at Sizzler, read by fire briefly

·        Clinic/barn, did Junie’s feet

·        Baked cookies, lemon méringue pie > clinic/barn > caught grey/white tomcat at barn > flute chair, OU Singers, etc. Georgann, Kerry Thomas, treated cat 11:00 pm clinic

·        To clinic/barn, called to locate cat’s owner > Pete to Charleston, lunch Luther Hosely > to CJs, ran errands > Pete home 4 am

·        To clinic/barn, Pete/Eric trimmed burros feet

·        Clinic all day > dewormed our equines > late supper, listed to Prairie Home Companion

·        Church > Pete, clinic > napped/rain > Pete moved manure at clinic barn, put 8 goslings in stall at barn

·        Clinic/barn > 9-12 pm beautiful moonlight ride, rode, led Apple back, Pete rode Junie, hot chocolate by fire

·        Cleaned out Pete’s dresser draw > Pete, Tim worked on fence in bottom on Lucas’ line/lunch here > to barn, female kitten dead, puncture wound, throat, lots of blood > Pete, draft horse class, late light supper

·        Pete, VA breakfast OU Inn > to clinic > wagged, took Bullet, Puff, Streak, Kanga, Colonel to white gate/back > bagpipe music B&B Studio, Pete intermission, sandwiches, full moon, dancing, ran out of gas on way home

·        Pete surgery, went to Charleston > to barn, took pictures of cat/kittens

·        To clinic, Mr. Fryman > midnight movie “Eating Raoul”, O’Hooley’s “Irish Brigade”

·        Picked up J, taxied to 71E, Carmille, Garry F’s wedding reception, Ashland, saw J’s new house, talked with Teresa > home 1:00 am

May 1983

·        Rain, slept in, big breakfast > Pete/Pat worked on board fence, Pat to emergency room, chainsaw kicked up, 37 stitches in neck, chest, tetanus shot > fed at barn, to bed early

·        Took horses down to Karl to reset, went down after halters, ropes > clinic, Linda B., Charles Green, P. Lewis, lunch here w/Pete > rode Junie to get in sheep to get them dewormed, trimmed feet on lame one (dead black lamb pneumonia) docked, castrated lambs with anesthesia, treated Faline > put horse down with Bob Null’s, founder, twisted filly > new lamb, left sheep in  > Pete on calls, back for dinner here, TV channel 20 Tim Sch. Came over and watched

·        To clinic/barn, let sheep out, Eric put chicken wire up for goslings, Kitso out catting around > road flooded in Chauncey > to Hartley’s, vet work, watched color TV

·        To clinic/barn, worked at desk > rode Junie, took Streak, Puff, Colonel, took down motorcycle run signs, wagged 45 minutes, found huge moral mushroom > Pete home 5:30 am

·        To clinic/barn > AAA office, got airline tickets, International Street Fair > Pete on calls > watched Kentucky Derby > Betty called > Pat, friend here fixed them stew, cheese > Pete at clinic, helped Pete hold colt for x-rays

·        To church, Croxford’s lunch > to clinic > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple, took Colonel, saw deer, grouse, Pete rode on over to Dow Lake, I came back, did laundry, read paper > Bill Perine left bunch of morels at clinic, had ½ for dinner > to barn, milked Faline > bed early

·        Worked at desk briefly > to clinic > Pat painted fence, here for dinner > wagged, took Sissy, Colonel, Puff, Kanga, saw trillium, dogwood > Pete jogged > R. Muhn here, hot water valve washer > Pete on calls > tried to weed strawberries, planted rose

·        Clinic/barn > Pete to Charleston, Stewart Watterson, rode on calls > tried to get lamb back in

·        Pete home 1:30 am > to clinic, Mr. Fryman > put sheep down in bottom

·        Sheep had gone thru gate put them back, cobbled up gate > Pete several horse surgeries, tired went to bed early

·        To church, Croxford’s > rode Junie, Colonel to put sheep back in bottom, talked with Shirley S (Wiggins), watched sheep > Pete on calls, calving case/helped put metal gate below old corral fence > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple, around farm, rained > Ann, Andrea, Jerry, Pete, me, pizza, movie “Blue Thunder”

·        To clinic/barn > Pete horse surgeries all day

·        Ran errands > to clinic looked for Colonel who took off, took pickup thru meadows looking for Colonel > put Junie in barn

·        Up at 5:30 am, rode Junie in rain, took Puff, Streak (lame right shoulder) looked for Colonel, took mare over to Windy Hills (Eric took mare/foal) > drove truck around looking for Colonel > Bob Evans Farms, beautiful Spanish Barb Stallion, unbroken Quarter mares, Stewart Watterson went on calls with us, Bob Wells and girl (Karl Meek’s friend), Byers Lippizans > to Charleston, Nancy Bonnett’s > home 3 am, Colonel here

·        Packed, etc., to clinic, put sheep back across cattle guard, drove to Columbus, plane overbooked, finally got on, Eric’s parents met us at Newark airport, drove us to Jim’s in Brooklyn, met Joanne, family, watched Preakness – Abbott, to wedding, ran into car on way to wedding; champagne ball, drove back to Millbrook with Susie, Pete slept

·        To Church, Abbott read reception > took Betty, etc., out to lunch > Newark airport, plane 1 hour late, saw Haffe’s owner there > back to clinic at 11:30, Paul Goddard in parking lot, mare, dead foal

·        Pete up early, removed foal, Paul Goddard here for breakfast, left

·        Pete pulled oxen’s wagon out of shut hay meadow gate, burned trash in ditch > called sheep herder all day > truck quit, coasted into Russell’s, Dave replaced coil wire > to courthouse, looked for deeds, ran errands > got sheep out of hay meadow, ran over goslings > Pete on calls, hit deer, Hartley’s, Arthur Palmer’s, lady gave me horse head candle, comfrey tea, very sleepy

·        Took blood samples to lab, got copies of deeds at recorder’s office > to barn, put sheep back down in bottom

·        Stewart Watterson on calls with Pete > Put sheep (used Colonel) on bottom again, put railroad ties under fence where sheep were going under, Eric helped check fences, tied up wire fence at West end of board fence > to clinic (checks, bills, turnovers) > put goslings back up at barn > put in storm windows > short nap > rode Junie thru woods, took Streak, Colonel, Puff, put dogs up > rode (schooled) Junie on bottom, got newspaper

·        Sunday School class, Pete church “Animal Stewardship,” lunch Old Coach Inn

June 1983

·        To clinic > sheep day fairgrounds, sheep dog demo Mautz; Jim here, went on calls with Pete

·        To church Pete, Jim, Jessica, me, Pat > to clinic, walked fence line took Streak, Colonel, repaired fence south end of pasture/hay meadow > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple

·        To clinic, herded sheep down, Eric sorted off lambs, separated colors, etc., wool too wet, turned them out

·        Pete on calls New River WV Maranantha Farms, beautiful drive, falls > Athens fairgrounds, Davidson’s

·        Put sheep in, sorted, etc., sheered a few, still too wet, turned out > Mom/Dad here, lunch Perkins

·        Pete, Stewart Watterson on calls > rode Junie, took Puff > Pat here to study, called Arlo about job

·        Got sheep in, sorted, damp still > Stewart Watterson, girl here > put sheep in

·        Worked at clinic all day > sorted sheep, lambs, etc. Eric/Pat > Stanley Strode sheared total 17 white, 22 black, 2 black rams > Wethor’s loop eared black, dapple faced white > watched Belmont Stakes at Windy Hills, looked at Dog pen for rams > Pete on calls

·        Early church > rode Junie, Pete rode Apple, Ann, Winnie, Victoria, Justin, trails > nap > to Windy Hills hot tub, swim

·        Worked on sheep bells > Pat here for breakfast > dewormed sheep, green dragon put bells on 7 sheep, took 2 rams over to Windy Hills dog pen > took rugs down at upper barn > nap > drove down, Eric’s horses out, Jack Eddy already had them in barn Pete bedded down sheds > Pete to Windy Hills, treated Woolfie’s

·        To clinic, ran errands, baling twine, etc., raked hay

·        Father’s Day, gave Pete socks, running shorts, turtleneck shirts > Pete on calls, saw Haflinger stallion at Johnson’s > to Bob Evans farm, saw Gambler (Spanish Barb Stallion), to Charleston, home 3:30 am

·        Pete baled hay > Pete on calls, stopped to change clothes > listened to Prairie Home Companion

·        To church > Jan Thompson to Old Coach Inn > Quilt National > storm > Pete rode, I rode Junie around pasture, checked water gap upstream, rained hard > Pete changed clothes at Marshall’s cabin, took Puff, went into see “Celebrate Life” program

·        To clinic > lunch 7 sauces restaurant, Eric/parents > worked at desk

·        Bob BB is here for breakfast, lunch > groomed streak > Pete on calls, took Bob home > met Eric’s parents at CJs > Bell choir, festival, Convo > to O’Hooley’s

·        Pete surgery early, on calls to WV, Stewart Watterson > ate at Sizzler Rock Springs > car overheated, new thermostat put in at Scott Burdette’s > to Nancy Bonnett’s, home by midnight!

·        Bullett got out of yard > to clinic, Mr. Fryman > drove Pete to WOUB, took cultures to O’Bleness

·        Pete on calls > cleaned out Scottie, hay, stung right hand by wasp > worked in garden > read

·        Jessica, 2 friends in early, Spider Behavior meeting at OU, left Song > Pat turned upstairs sink around > Pete rode Apple, Dow Lake, had to carry Colonel, I rode Junie, took Streak, got few early blackberries > to town, late for movie

·        Pete on calls > to clinic, ran errands > rode Junie, got blackberries, ground drove Junie > 2:30 am picked up Pete at Stop-n-Go, “Doris” oil all over her engine
